North Carolina Consortium for Logistics Education
The National Science Foundation in 1999 awarded the Kenan Institute's Center for Logistics and Digital Strategy and other members of the North Carolina Consortium for Logistics Education (NCCLE) a $400,000 grant to develop a curriculum in global logistics technology for two-year community colleges. The NCCLE Global Logistics Program fills an important vacuum in current educational offerings in logistics education by providing a curriculum at the community college level , courses for high school students and training programs for North Carolina companies.
Community College Curriculum
Offered initially in pilot programs at Lenoir Community College, a consortium member, and at the Education and Training Center at the North Carolina Global TransPark, the logistics curriculum will be available for other community colleges and two-year technical schools throughout the state.
- The curriculum uses written materials, Web-based instruction and laboratory simulation.
- The Education and Training Center provides a critical link between classroom instruction and hands-on training.
- This $6.2 million, 32,000-square-foot facility, which opened in 2000, features one of the most advanced networks for on-site and distance learning in the country, including a laboratory devoted to research in emerging logistics concepts and technologies.
- In the lab, students get real-world experience with up-to-date technologies such as global positioning systems, hand-held bar code readers and automated warehousing systems.
Courses for High School Students
Plans call for consortium courses to be offered to high school students through the North Carolina Information Highway and the Cyber Campus Network of the North Carolina School of Mathematics and Science. The program will feature a virtual teaming simulation of logistics processes with partner educational institutions around the world.
Training Programs for North Carolina Companies
To meet immediate business and industry needs across North Carolina, a series of fast-track training and re-training workshops in global logistics will be developed. Companies in eastern North Carolina and the greater Global TransPark region are participating in the program by providing a variety of work-based learning experiences for employees.
