  Economic Impact Analysis

C3E employs cutting-edge tools to provide economic impact analysis for its clients. Representative projects include: REMI (Regional Economic Multiplier Index) modeling, IMPLAN (input-output) modeling and a UNC impact study.

REMI modeling

C3E maintains a cooperative agreement with the North Carolina Department of Commerce to use the Regional Economic Multiplier Index (REMI) model for analyses of the economic impact of various interventions on the state economy. Center for Competitive Economies used this model on a Rural Economic Development Center study to understand the dimensions of tobacco dependency on North Carolina communities.

IMPLAN Modeling

C3E used IMPLAN, another input-output model, to estimate the economic impact of the North Carolina Speedway on the regional economy, to assist Richmond County, NC, and to analyze the impact of the Cape Fear Valley Medical Center and its affiliated health centers on the economy of Cumberland County, N.C.

UNC Impact Study

C3E completed a statewide analysis for the University of North Carolina General Administration to estimate the impact of the UNC system on the state economy. The study involved establishing partnerships with all 16 campuses of the system to collect and analyze necessary data. The methodology was based on the approach to university economic impact analysis developed by C3E Director Michael Luger and Harvey A. Goldstein during 1990 studies for UNC-Chapel Hill and North Carolina State University.
