Biography

Stephen M. Cumbie is executive director of the Center for Real Estate Development.

 

The center’s education, research and outreach in real estate development help business leaders create and manage property in ways that have a positive impact and sustainable results.

 

Cumbie is chief executive officer of NVCommercial Incorporated, NVRetail and the Metro Realty Group. These companies are engaged in commercial real estate investment, development and services companies, and have projects of more than $500 million in the Washington, D.C. and Denver metro areas.

 

Cumbie has served in leadership roles in community, business and charitable organizations in the Washington area, including currently as chair of INOVA Health System. He is, or has been a member of the boards of directors of the Fairfax County Chamber of Commerce, NVR Inc., INOVA, Potomac Bank of Virginia, UNC’s College of Arts & Sciences Foundation, SonoMedica Inc. and Washington Woodworking.  He is past president of the Northern Virginia Chapter of the National Association of Industrial and Office Properties (NAIOP) in 1991, and served on the national NAIOP board from 1999-2004.  Then-Governor Mark Warner appointed Cumbie to the Virginia Public Buildings Board, and Gov. Tim Kaine appointed him to the Virginia Port Authority Board of Commissioners.

 

He received his B.S. in chemistry Phi Beta Kappa and an MBA from UNC-Chapel Hill.
