Biography

Edward Maydew's teaching and research interests include, among other things, tax strategy, financial accounting, corporate taxation, economic effects of taxation and the role of accounting information in valuation.

Dr. Maydew is the David E. Hoffman Distinguished Professor of Accounting. He also serves as director of research for the UNC Tax Center.

He has received awards of excellence for his teaching and research. He is coauthor of Taxes and Business Strategy: A Planning Approach with Nobel Prize winning economist Myron Scholes and accounting professors Mark Wolfson, Merle Erickson and Terry Shevlin. He has published in the top academic journals in his field, including The Accounting Review, Journal of Accounting and Economics, Journal of Accounting Research, Journal of Finance (forthcoming), Journal of Public Economics, National Tax Journal, and Journal of the American Taxation Association.

Dr. Maydew consults with prominent law firms and corporations on a variety of complex accounting and tax matters. Prior to earning his PhD, he was employed by a predecessor of PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP in its Chicago office.

He formerly served on the faculty of the University of Chicago.

He received a PhD from the University of Iowa and a BBA from Iowa State University.

  • To calculate effective tax rates of life-insurance companies in "Lightly Taxed Insurers Aim to Tap TARP," The Wall Street Journal used a method developed by accounting professor Ed Maydew and his colleagues Michelle Hanlon of the University of Michigan and Scott Dyreng of Duke University. The trio published a 2008 paper "arguing that the ‘long run cash effective tax rate’ is the best measurement of a company's true tax obligations, in part because it eliminates distortions from a single year's swings." (Dec. 12)
